Prodigal, or as it was called when Kieran Kelly & I started writing it ‘Run 2 U,’ is nothing like the Bryan Adams hit… (however, it wouldn’t be bad to have some of that special sauce that makes hit radio dreams added to this if possible… )…. The song started out with a musical track that Kieran sent me with a basic program… we went back and forth from my studio to his with me sending him lyric and vocal melodies and Kieran perfecting the track… Jonathan Maron played bass on this one as he was also featured on Glory Boys, Irish Blood Up, Eurorail & Cornucopia…. he’s a monster ( more on that later ) … Kieran filled in on drums and keys…. we also got my friend Dwayne Larring to add guitars… The lyric and melody ideas to the song came rather quickly again for me… I remember sending Kieran my initial thoughts and he liked them all except for a couple small changes… The song is obviously about someone acknowledging the need for redemption…. The idea of the Prodigal Son parable was a constant when I wrote the lyrics.. the interesting first verse phrases about the ‘Wizard from 1809’ comes from real life conversations that I had with a friend of mine that had some visions of my past and future… I nicknamed her the ‘prophetess’ because of these deep conversations… she did open my mind up to generational sin and the need to pray about things we dont know about from our unknowable past…. I know that sounds a bit mysterious, because it is. ;)))) Prodigal (Run To You) turned out to be one of my favorites on this album as it has that effortless energy of driving down a winding road with the top down…. sun in your eyes, the doubts and fears disappearing in the rear view mirror.
